Smart vs Fun

Best Christmas tree ever this year! Still rockin a real tree but every year the thought of a fake one seems just a little bit smarter. Then again, how much fun can you have if you always pick the 'smart' choice?!

Hmmm, haven't heard much lately from the critics of the Phil Kessel or Dion Phaneuf trades.

Good decision fellas... Dale Crover (Nirvana) and Pete Best (The Beatles) both were the original drummers for their respective bands and quit (although Best claims he was fired). Woops.

I didn't talk to one person who was happy about sporting a stache for Movember. Great cause, but I wonder how many guys will do it again next year.

Heard a rumor that this super duo has found a backing band and will be playing Paddyfest 2012!http://www.reverbnation.com/jimntonic.  Next stop: Wembley Stadium!

I think I'm the only person I know that misses the NBA. I don't feel bad for any of them (players or owners), I just miss watching hoops. One of the worst things about the lockout is losing possibly half of one of the last years of Steve Nash's career.

There is a store in Troy, Michigan called Hockeytown Authentics that is all Wings and Tigers stuff.  I went there for the first time recently and had a complete 'kid in a candy store' experience!  I could spend a lot of money in that place.

I blame Philly for that recent debacle against the Lightning where Tampa wouldn't pressure the Flyer's D and Philly wouldn't move the puck up to expose Tampa's "trap" style.  First of all, this isn't the first time Tampa has played this way and second, they aren't the only team that plays this way.  There was a lot of criticism for Tampa coach Guy Boucher, but people forget that Scotty Bowman was famous for using the "Left Wing Lock" with the Wings, which is just a different version of the trap, only there wasn't any crying then.  It just made the Flyers (Laviolette mostly) look like a bunch of sucks.

The Penn State travesty is truly disgusting.  Not to make light of this, but the interview that Sandusky creep did with Bob Costas was unreal and reminded me of this... Chris Rock.

About a third of the season in and three of the top goal scorers in the NHL were Kessel, Milan Michalek and James Neal... just like we all predicted, right?

I watched the movie Limitless recently and it was terrific.  Bradley Cooper (dude from The Hangover) stars in it and it was one of those movies where it was hard to turn away from and you didn't want it to end.  It also has Robert DeNiro in it and he looks like he has shrunk a foot.

Big Wreck has reunited and will have a new album out in January.  Big Wreck's first album, In Loving Memory Of..., is one of my favourite albums.  I seen them perform at Fanshawe College a long time ago and it was a great show... almost.  We actually ran into the band behind the school before the show and asked them to play one of their trippier songs called "Overemphasizing".  Ian Thornley told us it's a tough song for them to play live but they would see what they could do.  Towards the end of their set they started to play it and half way through they mixed some Pink Floyd into the jam!  It was really really cool.... until some awful jack-ass pulled the fire alarm which ended the show.

So the Jays go back to the old school look unis.  I didn't mind the black and silver but was never a big fan of the "stylized J" that they used.  Glad they brought the Maple Leaf back in bigger and better as well.

The Wings are looking to host an Outdoor Winter Classic in the next year or two.  It will either be at Comerica Park or Michigan Stadium and I think it would be a riot to go to.  I know what I'm asking for for Christmas next year!

Not big on the new Black Keys album, El Camino, but the song "Little Black Submarines" is pretty cool.

Bruce Boudreau had to see his firing coming from miles away.  He either had to kiss Ovechkin's ass forever or risk upsetting him and starting a feud with a player that will never be traded.  I think Ovechkin comes off looking like a huge prima-donna in this.  It's one thing if you don't like your coach and you want him out, but to dog it like he has this year is a classless way to represent yourself, especially as the captain of the team.

Sidney Crosby comes back and throws up 4 points in his first game and looks like the best player in hockey again.  Then he takes a seemingly innocent couple hits and is now out indefinitely.  I hate to be a pessimist but I have a hard time envisioning him ever returning without continuous setbacks.

Just found out TOOL is playing in London this January.  I have only seen them once and it was at the end of a festival at the end of a long weekend and I was pretty much spent.  It was also dark by the time they came on and all you could see was the crazy screens behind the band.  This leads me to my Stick it in Your Ear song:  What's In The Ground Belongs To You - If These Trees Could Talk.

I like the new realignment of the NHL divisions for next year and I hope they come up with some stellar names for them rather than just East or West.

I hope the Jays make some significant moves this winter.  I know they have a good young core but if they want to take advantage of these MVP seasons Bautista is having they better not wait to long... how good could Bautista be if he was hitting in front of or behind Pujols or someone like that?

If someone smells like mouthwash all the time does that mean they are a drunk or just like to protect against gingivitis?

Merry Christmas!

All things Wings

I am getting just about the perfect birthday gift this year - tickets to a Wings game at Joe Louis!  Bring on beers at Hockeytown Cafe and a stop at Hockeytown Authentics!!

This will be Lidstrom's last year and here is what I'm hoping the Wings can pull off...  Shea Weber.  Stop laughing and hear me out.  Weber, all-star goalie Pekka Rinne and stud defenseman Ryan Suter are all due for new contracts next year in Nashville and it is unlikely they will be able to keep all three.  Weber has already turned down long-term offers from the Preds and took a 1 year deal for this season through arbitration, suggesting he could be eyeing up a new team.  The Wings could try to pick him up at the trade deadline if the Preds don't think he will sign, but they mosty likely won't trade him to a team in the same division - especially Detroit.  Or (and even better) Detroit could sign him long-term in the off season.  I was hoping for the same scenario with Doughty in LA, but that dream just got run over by a truck.  Detroit has been keeping 1st round picks for a number of years now and has good depth in the AHL to pull this off... plus, giving up a bunch of future picks is worth it for a defenseman like Weber.  I think Nik Kronwall is going to be an All Star defenseman but not an elite D man like Weber or Doughty.  Detroit has been paying Lidstrom $7 million + for quite a while so taking on Weber at that rate shouldn't be an issue.  GM Ken Holland says they have been planning for LOL (life after Lidstrom) since 2007 and the Wings also have almost $6 mil in cap space this season so they are ready to make a move.  This is crucial for the Wings... it's not very often that the team that wins the Cup doesn't have a Norris caliber defenseman.

I'm not sure what this nonsense is from NHL analysts that Datsyuk can't put up 90+ points any more. If Datsyuk followed the lead of most top scorers and only focused on the offensive side of the game he could easily reach 100 points and even challenge for the Art Ross. Instead he registers better than a point per game AND is the best defensive forward in the league -- he has won 3 Selke trophies in the last 4 years and likely would have won last year if he played the entire season. It's not that he can't rack up the points, he just chooses not to.

NHL fantasy junkies:  take Wings goalie Jimmy Howard.  His GAA and Save % went up a bit last year but that was in large part due to the Wings drop in team D and terrible penalty kill.  Both will be much better this year and his #'s will be impressive.  He's also a lock for at least 35 wins and I'm betting he puts up more than 40.

Had enough Wings talk yet?  How 'bout 1 more!

With the Thrashers moving to Winnipeg there is going to be a change in the divisions or even conferences next season.  The Wings are hoping to be able to move back to the Eastern conference and this would be fantastic.  Wings owner Mike Illitch recently stated that he was promised by the league that Detroit would be the first team to move back to the East.  It would be so nice not to have to stay up until 1am on a week night to watch the Wings playing playoff games on the West coast... until the finals!

There is a music festival called Duna Jam (www.dunjam.net ) which might be the coolest music event I have ever heard of.  It consists of a bunch of rock bands traveling around and playing on different beaches in all of these amazing places.  They only allow a small number of people so it is very intimate and they tour you around to all of these beautiful, remote places where you can drink and eat and party as you please while you watch a show.  Now that would be a hell of a vacation!  Colour Haze, my favourite current band, is a regular of this tour.  Of course it's usually in Europe.  So, if anyone is ever up for a quick flight to Spain or somewhere like that to party and watch live music on a beach for a week - let me know!

Anyone else worried that Kyle Drabek might be a bust?  I know he's young, but I was not impressed with anything I seen from him this year.  Drabek and catcher Travis D'Arnaud, who apparently did really well in the minors, were the main returns in the Halladay deal and if only one of them turns out to be good it looks like a stinky deal for the Jays.

God bless Jimi Hendrix for recording almost everything he ever played.  I like to think I know his catalogue pretty well but I still find new songs of his every now and again.  The latest is "Suspicious" on an album called "Jimi Hendrix, Vol.1" on iTunes.  It's a cool track and worth the $.99.  This track also led me to another cool tune (and artist) I had never heard of.  His name is Tommy Bolin and he has a bunch of good stuff, but check out "Cucumber Jam" - it's a beauty.  Bolin played with the James Gang (Joe Walsh's first band) and later on with Deep Purple.  He OD'd in 1976 at the age of only 25.

This guy is pretty funny... Mario Joyner.  This clip doesn't really do him justice but it's the best I could find.  I got to see him open for Seinfeld last year and he was really good.

Usually it sucks to see someone who wasn't playing well for the Jays go on to play well somewhere else, but I loved watching Aaron Hill do well for the D'Backs.

Listowel is supposed to be getting another Tim Horton's and I actually talked to a guy who was complaining about it... while he was holding a Tim Horton's coffee!

In my last post I wrote that I was looking forward to Radio Moscow's new album.  I downloaded it and it was not what I was hoping for.  So many bands can't seem to keep it together after the first album or two.  The later albums either go in a different direction or just don't have the same jam all the way through.

What a punk move my the Mets Jose Reyes in the final game of the season.  He's leading the Brewers Ryan Braun for the batting title (batting average) and he pulls himself after a sac bunt to protect his average instead of playing out the game.  You've probably all heard the story about Ted Williams going into the final day of the 1941 regular season with a batting average of over .400 and refusing to sit out to protect the incredible record.  He plays a double header that day and goes 6-8!  Reyes' gutless move also reminds me of NBA player Ricky Davis who was one rebound away from a triple-double (that's double digits in points, rebounds and assists in a game for all you b-ball haters) and he actually took the ball and shot on his own net so he could get the rebound.  Hopefully karma comes in the form of an inside fastball next year for Reyes.

Stick it in your ear: Slow Mama by Black Moses.

NHL prediction time:
Art Ross: Martin St Louis, Tampa Bay Lightning
Rocket Richard: Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning
Hart: Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning
Norris: Shea Weber, Nashville Predators
Vezina: Ryan Miller, Buffalo Sabres
Selke: Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings
Calder: Ryan Johansen, Columbus Blue Jackets
Jack Adams: Peter Deboer, New Jersey Devils
Stanley Cup: Detroit Red Wings (you knew that was coming)
Conn Smythe: Henrik Zetterberg

If I even get one of these right I will be happy... hopefully it's the second last one.

As mentioned the Radio Moscow album didn't work out as I had hoped but there are a couple more coming down the pipe that will hopefully be better.  Colour Haze - She Said on Nov. 1st and The Black Keys - El Camino on December 6th.

Hard to complain when your wife goes away for the weekend on a shopping trip... at least she comes home with something.   The only thing I bring home from a weekend away is a hangover, ticket stub and some foggy memories.

I think the Minnesota Wild win the award for the best player names in the league... Cal Clutterbuck, Clayton Stoner, Marek Zidlicky, Darrol Powe, Devin Setoguchi.  Don't even need to give those guys nicknames!

Cheers!

"I know what I have to do here"

It's the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind.  Holy plaid shirt I'm getting old!  It is still a great album and definitely a game-changer.  There was a concert in honour of this milestone and Krist Novaselic played a couple songs with the Presidents of the USA for some reason.  Actually they don't sound too bad... check it out: Novaselic & PUSA.  Either the PUSA guys are tiny tiny little men or Novaselic is still growing.

Cool flick to check out on a rainy day (because who watches movies when it's nice out? ... unless you're hungover).  Anyway, the movie is The Lincoln Lawyer with Matthew McConaughey.

Tough to see the Hill and McDonald trade go down.  Always wanted both of them to find that next level, but how long can you wait?  I'd put Johnny Mac up there with Alomar and Tony Fernandez as the best defensive infielders the Jays have ever had.  I don't know much about this Kelly Johnson 2B they got back, but I didn't know too much about Rasmus and Escobar before they came over either.  Carry on Anthopolous!

If you dig acoustic guitar stuff, check out this Canadian guitar wizard - Andy McKee.
I'm not sure if this makes me want to learn the guitar or never pick one up again.  I'm working on a mix of this kind of music so if you have any suggestions, let me know.

It's amazing how many Simpsons references you still hear on a fairly regular basis.

Anyone remember Fabian Brunstrom?  He was the much-hyped Swede forward that created a bidding war a few years ago and ended up with Dallas.  He sniped a hat trick in his first game and then did a whole bunch of nothing.  He actually ended last year with the Leafs but never made it further than the Marlies.  The Leafs were one of the teams trying to throw big bucks at him originally and ended up getting Jonas "The Monster" Gustavsson instead.  What fantastic scouting the Leafs have eh?!

I can't believe it's taken this many blogs to take a shot at the Leafs. I'll do better in the future, I promise - Lord knows it's not hard!

"I'm a molar, wisdom tooth...." -  Turn Ons / Turns Offs by Dane Cook.   Heard this one a hundred times and it's still funny!

Ice fishing trips and NFL trips are the same animal to me.  Both offer a seemingly good excuse to be a wild booze gorilla without any concerns whatsoever.  I think the fact that I only get to do them once a year also helps with the appeal... and my chances of survival.

Crazy weather around Listowel lately with Tornado watches and storms. I wonder what it's like to live in the Mid-Western US and go through this regularly.

One thing I still want to see at a wedding is for the groom to faint. Not get hurt, just fall down.

New album I am anxiously awaiting is "The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz" by Radio Moscow.  If you have never heard of these guys listen to their self-titled debut album.  It is excellent from start to finish and my favourite track on the album is "Luckydutch".

Funniest conversation I have had recently:
Me: "Make sure you eat that ice cream over the table".
My 3 year old (without looking away from the ice cream): "I know what I have to do here".

I went to another Jays game recently and for as much buzz as there was for every at bat Bautista had earlier this season, it is now the same when Lawrie steps up to the plate.  He is a freak and a lot of fun to watch - on offense and defense.

Stick it in your ear: "Goin Down Slow" by Free (classic rockers only known by most for "All Right Now").  Great old bluesy, rock tune.

I've thought about including more pictures in my blogs but I kinda like that the only pic I have ever used is of Rich "Goose" Gossage holding a goose!

I'm looking forward to watching Pierre LeBrun on TSN.  Bob McKenzie, Pierre McGuire and LeBrun are my favourite NHL "insiders" and it will be nice not to have LeBrun wasting his time talking to cement walls Glen Healy and Mike Milbury on CBC.

Trying my best to support BlackBerry but they sure are making it hard lately... the poor service with Bell isn`t helping anything either.  The new iPhone 5 comes out soon and could have me jumping ship.

Oh, golf... you miserable temptress... you're lucky I'm usually drunk when I leave you.

The Rodney Dangerfield of goalies

Let the debate begin... Chris Osgood is a Hall of Famer.  Have a look at his numbers:
NHL totals  GP:744 W:401  L:216  T:66  GA:768  SO:50  GAA:2.49  S%:.905
These numbers are better (and in some cases, considerably better) than Johnny Bower, Grant Fuhr, Gerry Cheevers and Billy Smith among others - all of whom are in The Hall.  The argument against him has always been that he played for the Wings, but I'm pretty sure it didn't hurt Grant Fuhr that he played with the Oilers in the '80's or Billy Smith that he played with the Isles during their dynasty.  Patrick Roy (douchebag) is one of the best all time, but do you think he would have the same numbers if he played part or all of his career with, say, the Panthers rather than the Avs with Sakic, Forsberg, Blake and Co.? I'm guessing the same people who don't think Ozzy should be in are the same people who don't think Lindros should make it either.  The bar has been set though (it's become the "Hall of Pretty Good") and ya can't change it now.  Oh, did I mention Ozzy won 3 cups, 2 Jennings and that he was in the running for the Conn Smythe in 2008 and 2009?

There must have been a groupon on travel deals for Canuck fans to London, England.  Yikes.

Funny man... Greg Giraldo.  Giraldo was a hilarious comedian that passed away in 2010 and is best known for his work on the Comedy Central Roasts.  Check out this series made on him -  Give it up for Greg Giraldo.

Reason #581 why I love Canada: It's the middle of the summer and stupid-hot outside, but there was a bunch of kids playing road hockey in the middle of the day!

I assume most people are the same and know little about the Steve Miller Band other than the greatest hits or what is played on the radio ("some people call me Maurice, whaaa-wooooo"!), but here are a couple cool tracks from his album "Recall the Beginning": High On You Mama and Fandango.

I can't remember the last time I liked so many Blue Jay players at the same time.  There isn't really anyone I dislike (besides the entire bullpen) and, despite their recent play, I still like Hill and Snider.  Which leads me to my...

Top 5 favourite Blue Jays of all time (Bautista is getting close to cracking the list):
5 - Jesse Barfield
4 - Dave Stieb
3 - Carlos Delgado
2 - Roy Halladay
1 - Fred McGriff

I could have sworn that I heard something about a Bon Jovi cover band on the radio the other day, but that can't be real can it?

Stick it in your ear: "Plazmakeks" by Colour Haze.  Skip to the 2 minute mark.  Awesome slow jam with no vocals that's kinda heavy/jazzy/smooth/psychedelic and just great. The best way I can describe it is Zeppelin meets Soundgarden.  This is probably the best band I have discovered in the past 5 years.

It's funny how your tastes change as you get older... like now I like tomatoes and rum.

I mentioned in an earlier blog that Big Sugar had a new album coming out.  Well it's out now and the samples I've heard are not very promising.  It has a strong reggae feel which does absolutely nothing for me.  The Red Hot Chili Peppers also have a new album coming out and they have released the first single, "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie".  It stinks.  I guess I should stop having such high expectations for bands working on their 47th album and the musicians are as old as dirt.

I have discovered the true purpose of the rearview camera that some vehicles have... it is best used for when you are about to leave a party and one of your drunk friends dances in front of it like he's making an old Beastie Boys video!

Is Travis Snider doomed?  I like Anthopolous but I heard him say earlier this season that he didn't like sending players down all the time and that he would rather let them stay with the Jays to work through their issues.  Snider seems to have the skills to pay the bills but can't stay consistent and it's likely because he's worried about being sent down every time he starts to slump.  I also think it's interesting that Arencibia is batting .200 and there is never talk of his struggles or sending him down.

30+ degree heat when you're hungover is just cruel.

The Buffalo Bills are playing more games in Toronto at the Skydome (I still like to call it the Skydome) this season, but until they figure out how to let the fans tailgate like you can in Buffalo it will never work.

Most people have heard of the Canadian band The Sheepdogs by now as they have been all over the radio with their single, "I Don't Know".  They are a good band and if you like that tune you should check out "Greedy Man" from their 2007 album "Trying to Grow".

Sucker for the blues

I went to see the two concerts I mentioned in an earlier blog and both were awesome.  The Soundgarden show was the loudest show I have ever seen.  The sound wasn't the greatest but it was still very cool to see.  Chris Cornell can still belt it out!  Cheers to Vanner for hooking us up with a box to watch the show as well - definitely the best way to watch a concert.  The second concert was The Black Keys and they were excellent!  My only complaint was that they didn't play another hour or two longer.  Amazing how good two guys can sound... gotta love good blues guitar.  Speaking of The Black Keys... they somehow have a new album ready to go and it is supposed to be out this fall.  Here is a cool article about it: http://www.spin.com/articles/studio-black-keys

Fireworks might be the biggest rip off on the planet... right after the price of beer at a pro sports game.

Stick it in your ear: Thirty-Four by Karma To Burn.  If ya need a great loud song to pump you up or get you somewhere fast in your car, this is a good track!

That Karma To Burn track reminds me of another mix I am making called "Steppin' On The Ice", which is a bunch of high-energy songs that would be great to hear when you step out onto the ice or field or court before a game.  Any suggestions?

The drive from Listowel to London might be the most boring drive on earth.

Here is my comedian vid, but beware... this isn't for the blouse-wearin poodle walkers out there.  His name is Patrice O'neal.  Make sure the kids aren't around!

This James Harrison fool from the Steelers who's spouting off about the NFL commissioner, other players and even his own teammates is a complete jack-ass. This is the same guy who has been suspended by the NFL for repeated head-hits. There are so many athletes who take what they have for granted and he is clearly one of them. Guys like him and Pacman Jones absolutely destroy the image and credibility of NFL players and it must be killing the NFLPA as they try to make a new deal with the NFL.

There is a cool show on TV right now called "The Franchise", which is a behind the scenes look at the San Francisco Giants 2011 season.  It's the same idea as the "24 - 7" series following the Penguins and Capitals last year or like "Oil Change", which followed the Oilers... except the Giants are actually good.  The best part about the show is Brian Wilson, the psycho reliever with the crazy beard, who is completely mental.

This probably wouldn't fly with the serious golfers, but I think golf carts should have an ipod dock built in.  It would have a volume control so it can only go so loud and turns off or pauses whenever you put the parking brake on.  It's the only thing golf is missing.

There's not much better than cottage life... especially if you have a pontoon boat.

There were a lot of complaints about the MLB All Star game and I don't get it.  It's the same sad song from the media about other all star games and I think they are completely missing the point.  All star games are meant to be laid back, fun and mostly for the amusement of kids.  It's not supposed to resemble a playoff game and I think all the critics need to just relax a bit or not watch.  I think it's cool to watch players joke around together for a couple days before they go back to hating each other once they are back with their own teams.

Here is another cool music link: http://www.setlist.fm/ . You can see the set list from almost every concert and watch a video of each song (not the live version from that show, but the band's video or a youtube video, etc.).

I watched Bartolo Colon pitch for the Yankees against the Jays and he got destroyed for 7 runs and didn't make it out of the first inning.  Even worse was that he was so out of shape that after trying to field the ball a couple times he had to stop for a breather because he was obviously out of gas.  I know he's 37 years old and I'm not expecting him to be able to run a marathon, but come on... surely when you are getting paid that much and playing in the bigs you should be able to resemble something better than a big greezy cheeseburger.

I miss the NHL already.

The British Open is by far the least interesting major.  I don't quite get the appeal of playing in garbage weather where it doesn't matter if you hit a good shot or not because the wind/rain/3 foot rough or whatever decides the outcome.  Isn't that the definition of a bad day for golf?

I need an inside man at Home Depot or Home Hardware or somewhere like that.  Paying retail is for suckers.

Remember when you had to get dressed up to go to church?  Some kids wear shorts and t-shirts now!   I'm not complaining - it looks a lot more comfortable than the Cliff Huxtable sweaters I used to have to wear as a kid.

Ring Tone Deaf

I'm curious what the thought process is for some people when they pick their ring tone... It must be something like this... "Hey, this one is really ridiculous and obnoxious!  And I can set it to ultra-high volume?  Excellent!".   Wankers.

I think Roberto Luongo might be the weirdest goalie ever.  But don't worry Canuckle Heads, you only have him for 11 MORE YEARS!

Is it just me or does the delivery guy in the Swiss Chalet commercial look like Jason Spezza?  I guess he needed something to do this spring!  Zing!

Stick it in your ear: "Penthouse Pauper" by CCR.  A good summer song and another example of a good tune that isn't on a Greatest Hits.

So The Big Shaq-Fu has hung up the size 22's.  I always liked how much fun he had and how goofy he was all the time.  Who was gonna argue with him I guess?  Good news is that he plans to go into broadcasting.

This is hilarious... Wooden Spoon Game.  So funny and reminds me of three guys I know.

Must be the Dutch in me... I will spend money on golf shirts and hats without thinking twice but I wont buy a bag of tees for $1.00 'cause it seems like too much money.

I wasn't expecting the Jays to be leading the league or anything but I was hoping for a bit more than this.

The Foo Fighters have a documentary out called "Back and Forth" and it is really good.  Even if you aren't a Foo's fan it is still worth watching.

This is an older one but still hilarious...  "Robin Williams".

Does watching Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh make anyone else miss MJ?

Why aren't there more round-abouts?  I've never heard anyone complain about them and they clearly work.

Car stereos should work like an iTunes account.  You should be able to send songs to your car stereo and build and edit playlists from your computer or phone.  Or even just sync your home iTunes account with your car.  Having an iPod plugged in with wires all over the place is stupid... reminds me of when I used to have to plug my discman into a cassette tape gizmo to listen to CD's in the old Oldsmobile!

I bet LL Cool J's Mom never told him to knock anyone out.

D-Winged?

The best time of the year in sports is followed quickly by the worst... now that NHL and NBA playoffs are almost over I found SportsCentre showing shot-putt highlights (honestly!) and the Fan 590 talking about the CFL supplemental draft - yuck!

I hadn't planned on doing this with my blogs, but I noticed that I've been offering clips of comedians and it seems like a fun thing to include as a regular feature.  So, here is another funny dude.... his name is Mitch Hedberg.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IueXtzdC6kA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-zFQ9fOTSU&NR=1 are pretty good.

Big Sugar is back together and has a new album coming out called "Revolution Per Minute".  Big Sugar will always stand out in my mind and not just because they are Canadian and I like their music.  They put on two of the more interesting shows I have ever seen.  Here is one of them... circa 2000 they played a show at the launch party for the Sony Playstation in Toronto and my brother won two tickets to the show.  When we got there we found ourselves in line with a bunch of business people in suits and dresses.  Then, once we got inside we found out that it was a FREE BAR!  Finally Big Sugar came on and all the suits fled for cover in the back rooms, leaving the concert floor completely empty except for us and two other young punks.  So, the four of us stood right in front of the stage with our free beers and watched the show.  We wouldn't have blamed the band one bit if they played 3 songs and called it a night but they played a decent length set and played pretty hard too!

The Beastie Boys have a new record out, called "Hot Sauce Committee Part Two".  I sampled some songs on iTunes and I don't know if it's because they are getting old or because I am (probably both!), but it just sounds silly.

I wrote earlier about how wicked Jose Bautista has been this year and recently I got to witness it first hand.  He went 3 for 4 with two walks and a 3-run homerun.  The homerun made him the fastest Jay to hit 20 jacks and second in MLB history to Barry * Bonds, who injected, er set the record in 2001.

Stick it in your ear:  "How You Like Me Now" by The Heavy.  The link is to a site called http://www.grooveshark.com/ , which is a cool free site to listen to full length songs and even albums.  So, if you didn't hear enough from the 30 second sample on iTunes or wherever, you can listen to it here.  You can also create your own playlists.

Rafalski retiring from the Wings was a big surprise and he will be tough to replace.  If Lidstrom follows suit the Wings will be in some serious trouble.  I remember being concerned when Yzerman's career was coming to an end and Shannahan, Hull and others were about to shut it down as well.  But the Wings had Zetterberg and Datsyuk in place and they have been outstanding (Zetterberg will be the Captain when Lidstrom does retire).  But this is different.  As great as Yzerman was, even in a diminished role by the end, replacing a perennial Norris trophy defenceman will be almost impossible.  The Wings were hoping that Nik Kronwall would be able to take his place as the lead d-man and, although Kronwall is very good, he is miles away from Lidstrom (most are).  There are two promising players on their way in Brendan Smith and Jakub Kindl, but Detroit wont rush them and needs elite blueliners at the stage that this team is at.  The bright light for the Wings is that if anyone can keep the train on the tracks it's GM Ken Holland.

More Canadian rock news... Jeff Martin, former lead man of The Tea Party, has a new band called "777".  Nothing fantastic from the little I heard but there was one cool track called "Riverside Rambler".  Definitely some Zep influence.

I haven't liked the Jays bullpen since Duane Ward was setting things up for Tom Henke.

It was so pathetic to watch Garry Bettman talk about how happy he was to be bringing an NHL team back to Winnipeg.  It might be impossible for him to do anything right!

Southern Comfort

OK, I'm droppin' the gloves...

Probably not a popular thought here, but I don't buy the "hockey can't work in the Southern US" line that is so commonly heard from Canadians.  Tell me why hockey can't work in Nashville, Atlanta or Phoenix but works just fine in San Jose, Dallas and Anaheim?  Winning, duh?!  Obviously that's not the sole reason, but riddle me this... baseball was brought to Toronto in 1977 and within 8 years they won their division and obviously the World Series in '92 & '93.  Since then the Jays haven't made the playoffs (or even been close) and their attendance has dropped dramatically, but there was a fan base established because of those winning years.  Yet, if someone were to suggest now that baseball doesn't work in T.O. and the team should be moved to Las Vegas or Oklahoma or Utah - "where they really love baseball" - there would be a riot on Yonge St.  Not long ago the Chicago Blackhawks were a disaster with one of the worst attendance and winning records in the league and were losing as much money as a Charles Barkley diet plan.  A change of ownership and management led to strong drafting, better organizational structure, a winning team and, eventually, a financially successful franchise.  This is largely a management problem, not a location problem.  I'm not saying that these places are guaranteed to work or that I don't want more teams in Canada, rather that the blame should fall on the proper villain.

Wow, that was pretty serious for a Bonesminded blog eh?  This should get things back on track.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBMsPNI6EZE

The worst part about baseball is some teams already know they are done for this season... how the hell do they stay focused?  Expand the playoffs already.

Conan is by far the funniest late night guy and it's awesome that the Comedy Network airs his shows at earlier times.

What happened to cool sports nicknames like "Air" Jordan,  Bobby "The Golden Jet" Hull, Darryl "Chocolate Thunder " Dawkins, Clyde "The Glide" Drexler, Dave "The Hammer" Schultz, "Magic" Johnson, Fred "Cyclone" Taylor, "Pistol" Pete Maravich, Andre "The Hawk" Dawson, Rich "Goose" Gossage, William "The Refrigerator" Perry... all kinds right?
What do we get now? A-Rod, K-Rod, Melo, D-Wade, Glen "Big Baby" Davis, "Ovie", Rod "He Hate Me" Smart, T.O.?  Weak!

Does anyone care that Jim Rome is burning?

Top 5 favourite drummers:
5 - Dave Grohl - Nirvana
4 - Manfred Merwald - Colour Haze
3 - Matt Cameron - Soundgarden
2 - Danny Carey - Tool
1 - John Bonham - Led Zeppelin

Why does my Tim Horton's lid always open at the seam of the cup?  Drives me crazy.

Tosh.O is a pretty funny show but I can't help but feel like I really pissed away a half an hour after watching it.

When did blue jeans and a t-shirt become acceptable gear at a (real) golf course?  Are we golfing or going to a Bruce Springsteen concert?

Cheers!

Not a potatoe between them

Well, I haven't been heckled for my blog yet - probably 'cause no one read it!  Actually, I did get a couple compliments... and world blog domination begins!

Coolest music story I discovered recently: In 1969 the Rolling Stones attempted to make a film called "The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus" with a bunch of celebrities and music stars.  The movie never happened but there was a soundtrack, which included a band called The Dirty Mac.  The Dirty Mac was John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix drummer) and they did a kick-ass cover of the Beatles "Yer Blues".

Saw a hilarious Irish comedian named Tommy Tiernan recently at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto.  Check out this clip of him doing Just For Laughs a while back... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3UL_uCNWCo&feature=related.  Not nearly as R rated as the show we saw, but still funny.

So, one of Chris Bosh's complaints about T.O. was that he wasn't getting any endorsement deals.  Since he went to Miami he has been in 1 ad... a milk ad.  Livin large now eh, Chris?

Speaking of basketball players... a pretty gutsy display by Celtics' Rajon Rondo who (grossly) dislocated his elbow, came back in the game and played the next game without taking any shots or pain killers.  A tough basketball player - who knew?

It's sad that the May 2-4 weekend doesn't even register to me as a party weekend anymore.  Just happy to sleep in until 7:30 one extra day!

Pretty impressed with the Wings push to get to within one goal of the West finals.  Tough way to go out with Franzen, Cleary and Bertuzzi all being hurt (plus Datsyuk playing with a bad wrist).  No excuse though - Sharks were good and deserved to go on.  Although, Heatley is a ghost of his former self and Thornton is a giant whiner.

Best part about the Wings having a good run like they did is that hopefully that convinces Lidstrom to play another year.

Two concerts that I'm looking forward to:  The Black Keys and Soundgarden both at the JLC in London this July.  Although, after seeing Sabbath do a reunion tour (drummer Bill Ward looked like Jabba the Hutt) I'm a little worried about the Soundgarden show.

How good is Jose Bautista?  He has to be the MVP right now.  He's one of those players you will watch a game just to see him.  Speaking of which, I'd like to try to get to a few games this year.

Guilty pleasure on TV right now is the song in the new Heineken commercial.  It's called The Golden Age by The Asteroids Galaxy Tour.  Don't ask how I know that.

When the hell is Listowel going to get a real bar?  One with a patio would be nice too!

Guy Boucher was offered the head coaching job in Columbus last summer and said no, hoping that Tampa Bay would call.  Smart move.

Nice Gill Morgan!

Blog Rookie

Blogs eh?  Ok, why not?

So my blogging mentor, hosehead04.blogspot.com once asked:  "Am I interesting enough to write a blog?".  My first thought was "No", but I get a kick out of reading them every time and they look like they are fun to write.  People who post every ridiculous thing they are doing on Facebook makes no sense to me, but a blog only gets read if someone chooses to read it.

So, here goes...

Funniest sports moment in a while:  Jordan Eberle trying to shake hands with some sponsor lady at the IIHF tournament and getting shot down!  Even Eberle knows it's funny!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcFn-jXPl_o

I"ll always be a Wings fan and I still love Zetterberg and Datsyuk, but it's tough to watch my next two favourite teams, The Hawks and Lightning, and not wish that Detroit had some good young Canadians on the team.  Guess I will just have to settle for year after year of playoffs and Cup contenders!

Just finished my Unearthed 10 mix (new found rock music) and like after each one, I think this is the best one yet.  Here are a few of my favourites from it...
-Silbury Sands by Wolf People
-Chimney by Yellow Moon Band
-Sneak Out by Rose Hill Drive

Also just finished another mix called "Classic Rock Light".  Fun, easy-going 60's & 70's summer tunes inspired by Rocco.  I've got two more mixes in the works.... "Under Cover" (cover songs) and "Turtle's Pace" (super mellow and acoustic tunes).  Any suggestions?

This is one of the the best times of year... NHL and NBA playoffs, golf and baseball back on and (usually) the sun is shining!

Last year the Caps ran into Jaro Halak and this year it's Dwayne Roloson.  No sympathy though... JS Giguere in 2007 comes to mind.

Is there some way that the Heat and Celtics can eliminate each other?  That would be great.

Seems like 2011 is a year for big changes with many of my friends.  All good moves in my eyes and hopefully they all work out.

I really like Jim Hughson as a play-by-play guy but he is clearly pro-Canucks.  Still better then listening to Bob Cole, who actually said "Everything is happening" during a round 1 game.  Let it go old man.  Let it go.

If nothing else comes from these blogs, I hope that I get some funny responses and even better would be some music recommendations.

Cheers!
