The best time of the year in sports is followed quickly by the worst... now that NHL and NBA playoffs are almost over I found SportsCentre showing shot-putt highlights (honestly!) and the Fan 590 talking about the CFL supplemental draft - yuck!
I hadn't planned on doing this with my blogs, but I noticed that I've been offering clips of comedians and it seems like a fun thing to include as a regular feature. So, here is another funny dude.... his name is Mitch Hedberg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IueXtzdC6kA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-zFQ9fOTSU&NR=1 are pretty good.
Big Sugar is back together and has a new album coming out called "Revolution Per Minute". Big Sugar will always stand out in my mind and not just because they are Canadian and I like their music. They put on two of the more interesting shows I have ever seen. Here is one of them... circa 2000 they played a show at the launch party for the Sony Playstation in Toronto and my brother won two tickets to the show. When we got there we found ourselves in line with a bunch of business people in suits and dresses. Then, once we got inside we found out that it was a FREE BAR! Finally Big Sugar came on and all the suits fled for cover in the back rooms, leaving the concert floor completely empty except for us and two other young punks. So, the four of us stood right in front of the stage with our free beers and watched the show. We wouldn't have blamed the band one bit if they played 3 songs and called it a night but they played a decent length set and played pretty hard too!
The Beastie Boys have a new record out, called "Hot Sauce Committee Part Two". I sampled some songs on iTunes and I don't know if it's because they are getting old or because I am (probably both!), but it just sounds silly.
I wrote earlier about how wicked Jose Bautista has been this year and recently I got to witness it first hand. He went 3 for 4 with two walks and a 3-run homerun. The homerun made him the fastest Jay to hit 20 jacks and second in MLB history to Barry * Bonds, who injected, er set the record in 2001.
Stick it in your ear: "How You Like Me Now" by The Heavy. The link is to a site called http://www.grooveshark.com/ , which is a cool free site to listen to full length songs and even albums. So, if you didn't hear enough from the 30 second sample on iTunes or wherever, you can listen to it here. You can also create your own playlists.
Rafalski retiring from the Wings was a big surprise and he will be tough to replace. If Lidstrom follows suit the Wings will be in some serious trouble. I remember being concerned when Yzerman's career was coming to an end and Shannahan, Hull and others were about to shut it down as well. But the Wings had Zetterberg and Datsyuk in place and they have been outstanding (Zetterberg will be the Captain when Lidstrom does retire). But this is different. As great as Yzerman was, even in a diminished role by the end, replacing a perennial Norris trophy defenceman will be almost impossible. The Wings were hoping that Nik Kronwall would be able to take his place as the lead d-man and, although Kronwall is very good, he is miles away from Lidstrom (most are). There are two promising players on their way in Brendan Smith and Jakub Kindl, but Detroit wont rush them and needs elite blueliners at the stage that this team is at. The bright light for the Wings is that if anyone can keep the train on the tracks it's GM Ken Holland.
More Canadian rock news... Jeff Martin, former lead man of The Tea Party, has a new band called "777". Nothing fantastic from the little I heard but there was one cool track called "Riverside Rambler". Definitely some Zep influence.
I haven't liked the Jays bullpen since Duane Ward was setting things up for Tom Henke.
It was so pathetic to watch Garry Bettman talk about how happy he was to be bringing an NHL team back to Winnipeg. It might be impossible for him to do anything right!
